Summary of readings

I found it very interesting how different designs are between Print and Web medium. It seems as though the similarities are that the designer needs to know their audience, and that the design needs to be captivating, intriguing, and/or informative. It's also very important to stick to the basics of design to ensure that a successful print or web design is created.

Chapter 5 focused on the differences between the two mediums. Overall the the web medium is the best. It is much cheaper, you can do it from almost anywhere, you can make changes as much as you want, you get immediate feedback, and adding content or color doesn't increase costs. Another big advantage is that if you make a mistake, you can make changes/corrections very quickly -- and at no expense.

Overall, web publishing is probably the most cost effective way to get your message out, but there is still a need for using printed media. The advantages of using print media, is that it is much more portable, it's cheaper to read, for most people it is easier to read, the display format is much easier to control, and the tools for printing are better developed.

Chapter 6 went over the basic design principals (APRC) that we discussed in class, but I prefer ordering the principals as CRAP -- as it's much easier for me to remember them.

I liked that chapter 6 had examples of various web sites, and that it showed how to improve on the sites by applying the CRAP principals. This was very helpful!
